That's a bummer.  Hopefully by the time you're ready for a new device they will be.  The $700 price tag was a turnoff for me as well but they recently lowered it to $399 US off contract if you buy it direct from Google but I have no idea what the pricing/availability is in other countries.  I was in the market for a device before they did this and got a Nexus S off contract for ~ 350 which is a pretty nice device as well.  There's also talk of a $200-$250 Nexus wifi tablet to be released shortly that might be of interest (and availability might be better worldwide since carriers won't be involved)

My thinking exactly... down the road the pros/cons of their approach is well worth at least thinking about.
