Any kind of status/control which one wants to keep visible.

  Current weather
  Laptop battery charge status
  Sound level
  Media playback control
  Network status/activity
  eMail/IM arrival
  CPU/Memory/Disk/.. capacity

We just have to write enough interesting things to show off.  ;^)
